The new big new thing in marijuana genetics is a type of cannabis called “triploid.”

Triploid plants produce significantly heavier harvests, higher resin gland density, a wider variety of cannabinoids and terpenoids, and are more resilient compared to photoperiod or autoflowering marijuana.

For those of us tired of hermie marijuana, triploids are a welcome relief, because infertility is also a common triploid traits–triploid plants won’t produce seeds even if you expose them to pollen.

But what is triploid cannabis and how is it made?

Start with the fact that standard “diploid” cannabis contains two sets of ten chromosomes, one set from the pollen plant and one from the female plant, so each plant has 20 chromosomes total.

The vast majority of cannabis strains are diploid. If a plant has more than the normal 20 chromosomes from a male parent and female parent, it is called polyploid, and can include triploid and other genetic alternatives to diploid.

Nature rarely creates polyploid cannabis, although some researchers claim that MAC #1 (Miracle Alien Cookies), is a natural triploid cross of Alien Cookies x Colombian x Starfighter grown from a clone bred by Dark Heart Nursery in San Leandro, California.

However, assertions that a “natural” mutation created a triploid MAC is questionable, given that Dark Heart publicly announced it’s doing genetic manipulation to create triploid strains.

Research on more than a dozen cannabis cultivars revealed a natural triploid rate of only 0.5%. Out of every 200 marijuana plants you’d grow, only one would be naturally triploid.

Triploid cannabis contains three sets of chromosomes, with 30 in total. Each plant has ten chromosomes from one parent and 20 from the other.

Triploid cannabis seeds are made by inducing a third set of chromosomes in the plant through natural plant breeding–this is not genetic modification. The triploid transformation is done by exposing plants to an organic compound called colchicine that disrupts cell division and creates plants with four chromosomes. These four-chromosome set (Tetraploid) plants are bred with regular two-chromosome set (Diploid) plants, creating seeds with three sets of chromosome (Triploid) that are 99% sterile.

Research shows triploid plants have sturdier cell walls and other internal structure, leading to increased resistance to drought, pests, and pathogens. Triploids produce more biomass overall, and denser, heavier flowers with higher percentages of THC and other desired compounds, compared to regular cannabis.

They’re infertile, meaning they won’t generate seeds even if exposed to pollen. No more worries about hermies or male flowers!

Please remember: these genetic variations are developed via traditional selective breeding and use of chemicals, not GMO gene editing.

Until Humboldt Seed Company released its 2024 cannabis seeds menu, reliable high-THC triploid cannabis strains existed only in our dreams. Leave it to Humboldt Seed Company, by far the most professional cannabis strains breeder on the planet, to break the triploid barrier.

They’ve released two triploid strains as part of their 2024 debutantes:

Their OG Kush Triploid XXL strain is crushingly potent, with a 50-50 Indica/Sativa split. Strain potency is as high as 32% THC, giving you the classic OG Kush euphoric but relaxing high with the taste and scent of pine and citrus. This is the heritage OG Kush people love for medical effects that reduce pain, stress, anxiety, and depression.

You’ll need iso alcohol to clean your hands, inhalation gear and trim scissors, that’s how gooey the glowing green buds with their intense orange hairs are. HSC tells us that the triploid version of OG Kush is so much better than regular OG Kush that is has rekindled interest in what many considered to be a “too old-school” strain.

You only need 48-55 days in bloom phase to get an unusually heavy harvest of incredible buds.

We already told you about HSC’s Jelly Donutz strain, which is a big winner in the diploid category. Now they’ve made Donutz Triploid, a feminized 50/50 strain with very short bloom phase (45-55 days), high THC percentages, extreme resin gland density, and a functional, chill high.

As with Jelly Donutz, taste and scent are supremely sweet, like glazed donuts, with a hint of diesel.

And if their triploid revolution is not enough for growers looking to have unicorn strains better than any other strains in the universe, Humboldt Seed Company has also released several fire new feminized diploid strains, including…

Guzzlerz is a knockout narcotic strain that combines Gusherz x Skittlez x Triangle Kush into a 35% THC head and body bomb.

You’ll need good grow room filters to handle the powerful ammonia and fuel smell emanating from the fat buds this strain produces after a 55-60 day bloom phase. Novice users beware–don’t operate machinery or attempt advance mathematics while high on Guzzlerz.

And don’t forget about Orange Creampop (reviewed here) and Granny Candy, two new diploid strains you’re sure to love.

These are only some of the fire new strains from Humboldt Seed Company, so go check their 2024 menu and get these strains as soon as possible. The triploids sold out immediately, so you might have to beg to get on their waiting list, and it’s worth it.

We’ve said it before and it’s now more true than ever: Humboldt Seed Company has the most diverse, tasty menu of unicorn photoperiod and autoflower strains available anywhere. With their world-beating introduction of the first-ever reliable, high-potency triploid strains, they’ve won the Super Bowl of marijuana seed breeding companies, by a wide margin, no need for overtime.

Not even Mahomes, Kelce, Taylor Swift and all the other marijuana seeds companies combined can beat Humboldt Seed Company!
