This strain report is about Squirt, a feminized photoperiod strain made by Humboldt Seed Company based on Tangie, Tang, and Blueberry Muffin genetics.
We’ve only test-grown the strain once, growing seven plants from seed indoors in Pro-Mix under LED lights. Due to climate change, the grow room was hotter than it should have been, and because of that, vapor pressure deficit problems negatively impacted all strains in that growing season, so our results from this first test should not be interpreted as a comprehensive, final evaluation of the strain.
We gave Squirt five weeks in grow phase to give plants time to build structure. At week four we started reducing light hours so at the end of grow phase the plants were getting a 12/12 light schedule. We did this because some Humboldt Seed Company strains go hermie if subjected to a “hard flip” which happens when you go from 18 hours of grow phase light to 12 hours of bloom phase light in one day.
Note that for most other marijuana seeds companies, their strains go hermie regardless of your cultivation protocols, because they were bred wrong. Also note that our seven Squirt plants had zero hermie traits.
During grow phase, Squirt was a relatively heavy feeder with sturdy branches and a naturally short, wide profile that didn’t require much topping. Unfortunately, the strain is a spider mite magnet–Squirt plants were the only ones in the room that persistently had mites.
After trying sulfur spray, Azamax spray, a sulfur burner, and pyrethrum to stop the mites, we finally got rid of them by foliar spraying SNS 217C. This is a non-toxic “natural” product that works kills adult mites and their eggs, and does not leave harmful, noticeable, or repulsive bud residue.
Bloom phase stretch was less than 70% of originating height, which could be caused partially by strain genetics, and/or because we did a soft flip, and because we’ve learned to increase light intensity in bloom phase so plants get almost as much total daily photosynthetic photon flux density in 12 hours as they did in 18 hours.
This lighting tactic came after we saw research showing the main reason cannabis plants stretch so much in the first 1-3 weeks of bloom phase is because reduction from 18 to 12 hours of light starves them of their total daily light needs, so they stretch trying to get closer to the artificial sun.
Squirt was the first strain in the room to develop primordial flowers, and it was obvious early on that the Squirt pheno we were growing was loaded with anthocyanins that make buds lovely deep purple, crimson, violet.
Bud morphology was rather bizarre, as photo accompanying this article shows. The buds didn’t fill from the bottom or have rounded or pointed tops like most buds do. Instead, they developed multiple foxtails that spiraled like little castle turrets. This is indeed a rare type of bud structure.
Eventually, the buds did fill in, although the spiky structures still dominated so the buds were not solid and dense like regular buds. Nevertheless, Squirt plants managed a respectable yield, generating 4-5 ounces of dried buds each from plants that were averaging 49 inches tall.
Properly dried and cured, Squirt buds are beautiful lilac chunks of resin. Along with their gorgeous bud color, you get delicious taste and scent. HSC is legendary for its rare, intense terpenoid combinations, and Squirt is one of its most aromatic. Distinct flavors/scents of grapefruit, sweet fruit, tangerine, lemon are abundantly seductive…going boldly beyond other Tangie-derived strains or originals.
HSC says this strain generates massive resin density, but the seven plants we grew didn’t have unusually dense or large resin glands, and a higher percentage than usual were non-stalked resin glands growing flush with leaf surface.
Calyx to leaf ratio is favorable, making the strain relatively easy to manicure, except that the weird foxtailing makes trimming harder than with other types of buds.
The strain is described by its creator as being 80% Sativa dominant, with an energizing high, and a very short 50 day bloom phase. We found this description totally accurate. The strain was ready for harvest at 51 days, wonderfully rapid for a truly Sativa-dominant plant.
The high comes on fast and is a jolt of euphoria, creativity, and energy, similar to the high you get from HSC’s Jelly Donutz or Orange Cream Pop, but not exactly the same. This is a high for active people, not couch surfers, but the good news is it’s not like caffeine, and doesn’t make you jittery, paranoid, or too high to sleep well!
HSC says the strain has 17-20% THC, but our testers believe it’s more potent than that. We use potency-enhancing techniques such as applying ultraviolet light to buds for a few seconds every day in bloom phase just before lights go out. We also use products such as TPS Signal that boost cannabinoid and terpenoid production, and we add tank C02 to grow room air for the same reason.
We look forward to ongoing seasons with Squirt when indoor grow room conditions are closer to ideal. We believe that in better conditions (and without mite problems), this strain would have produced even larger yields, the buds would not have foxtailed so much, potency would have been even higher, the already-awesome taste and scent even more attractive.
The bottom line is that Squirt is yet another impressive, tasty, feminized photoperiod Sativa strain from Humboldt Seed Company, offering incredible, unique terps, heavy harvests, and a stimulating, strong, fun high. It’s well worth growing.
