In early 2023, we did a preview article on a new marijuana strain from Humboldt Seed Company (HSC), called Blueberry Pancakes.
We noted the strain contains genetics you can’t get anywhere else, including Slurricane and Purple Panty Dropper (P.P.D.), and was discovered and perfected during a massive breeding and phenotype hunting project.
Slurricane comes from Do-Si-Dos and Purple Punch. P.P.D. is a Humboldt Seed Company strain combining Matanuska Mist, Oregon Grape, Purple Haze, AK-47, White Widow and other genetics. Purple Panty Dropper produces aphrodisiac effects–there are many stories of exotic sexual experiences assisted by P.P.D.
Primordial Blueberry Pancakes genetics also include Triple OG, Stardawg, Subcool’s Jack the Ripper, Blueberry Muffin, and many other desirable strains.
We did our first test grow of Blueberry Pancakes indoors under SANlight LEDs, using Pro-Mix HP as the root zone medium.
Initially, the plants had minor problems absorbing nutrients, which is something we’ve experienced with Blueberry strains before.
After flushing with TPS Liquid Soil, reducing parts per million of the feed program, and using daily foliar sprays of TPS Canopy Growth and One at 5.7 pH and 270 ppm, the nutrients absorption problems disappeared by week four of grow phase, and regular root feeding rates were fine after that.
Perhaps because of the early nutrients issues, but also seen in other Blueberry strains, Blueberry Pancakes plants were shorter, stockier, and sturdier than other strains in the same grow room.
After four weeks in grow phase, and several toppings, they averaged 19 inches in height, and only stretched to an average 39 inches of finished height during bloom.
This lack of excessive stretch, and the way you can create a wide, dense profile using topping, make Blueberry Pancakes ideal for sea of green, grow tents, outdoor marijuana growing and other situations in which vertical height should be kept low.
Note also: Blueberry Pancakes has impressive phenotype consistency, so all plants look and perform pretty much the same.
Blueberry Pancakes plants developed resin glands and terpenoid scent faster than any other strains growing with it. Starting about 15 days into bloom phase, the buds started smelling exactly like blueberry pancakes. The photo accompanying this article was taken at only 25 days into a 60-day bloom phase!
Indeed, exceptionally unique, seductive terpenoids are a key reason Humboldt Seed Company is the top marijuana seeds and strains company in the world.
We’ve tested seeds from and studied the seeds/strains menus from hundreds of cannabis seeds companies, from the oldest and best-known to the newest and most obscure. Humboldt Seed Company has dozens of strains nobody else has, and there are no duds in their menu.
By week four of bloom phase, the entire grow house smelled like blueberry pancakes. It’s a delicious smell, but caused problems because we got munchies and were always hungry from it. Imagine every time you’re in your house you smell blueberry pancakes!
Funny thing is, the smell is not a security risk because the strain doesn’t smell like marijuana, it smells like gourmet dessert pancakes with syrup.
The blue/red/scarlet coloration often seen on leaves and buds from Blueberry strains first appeared in week four, and intensified.
Internode length was short, and around week five the buds started rapidly stacking to become branches of solid, gooey, scented flowers. Very few leaves in the buds, which means you save time on manicuring.
After buds stacked to fill branch internodes, they started swelling in diameter. These are not hugely fat Indica buds the diameter of a Coke bottle, but they are moderately large and very dense.
Of note is that resin glands started became pure white early on. The resin glands were plentiful and huge, creating an effect more impressive than heritage White Widow strains.
In many strains, resin glands only go cloudy at end of bloom phase when it’s time to harvest. That is not the case with Blueberry Pancakes.
At 53 days in bloom, more than half the resin glands were pure white, like glowing pearls, much larger than I’d seen before, in fact much larger than average and bud scent was intensely delicious.
We harvested at the 60 days recommended by HSC, but could have harvested a a few days earlier.
I worried about mold risk starting in week five, and had a hard time as always balancing vapor pressure deficit issues with desired humidity and temperature to block gray mold.
Fortunately, gray mold had not developed during cultivation, nor did it show up in drying and curing.
Buds dried to about 58% humidity in the jar and are spongy, gooey, scent bombs that retain the blueberry flavor and scent.
Average yield per plant was slightly less than four ounces, which is great for small indoor plants.
Some Blueberry strains are too Indica-sedating for me, but Blueberry Pancakes is the opposite. It tests at at least 31% THC, and you can feel that extreme potency, but the high is energizing, euphoric, smiley, just slightly relaxing and pain-relieving.
It’s not a “speedy” high like pure Sativas, so there’s no worry about paranoia, racing thoughts, insomnia, etc.
On the other hand, you could use this strain in the daytime and not worry about it anchoring you to a couch or creating ravenous munchies.
It is a very interesting combination of head high and body high that you rarely find. If you’re familiar with other HSC strains, the high effects are like a cross between Raspberry Parfait ( an invigorating Sativa-dom) and Blueberry Muffin (a calming Indica).
The buds dry and cure to a beautiful lilac-green color and the delicious scent intensifies during storage. This strain definitely would have scent and visual appeal for commercial bud sellers. Properly cured buds smell like a blueberry Pop-Tart.
Using a professional vaporizer, the taste is syrupy sweet, fruity, and smooth; the vapor is heavy and resinous.
Experienced users can handle the one-hit strength and uplifting but somehow also calming high. Novice users should be cautious not to overindulge.
Humboldt Seed Company has two other superlative blueberry strains you should grow. When you compare the HSC strain menu to any other marijuana seeds company, it’s obvious HSC has the most diverse, unicorn, impressive suite of strains of any company anywhere.
